Mike Weathers Designated Paul Harris Fellow
by Bob Augustin Jr.
The Lawrenceburg Rotary Club posthumously awarded Mike Weathers with a Paul Harris Fellowship at its May 6, 2009 meeting. Accepting the award was his daughter Makenzi, Angela Mangrum, his brother Jonathan Weathers and sisters Melissa Weathers, Donna Weathers and Brandi Burdette. Rotarians Jack Grinnell and Bill Phillips presented the award to the family and Jonathan Weathers thanked the club on behalf of the Weathers family.
Mike Weathers was a good friend to the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club, but, more importantly, he was a good personal friend to each of us. The motto of the Rotary Club is "Service Above Self" and Mike Weathers lived this creed everyday of his life. Whether it was through his position as Manager of the Street Department with the City of Lawrenceburg or his previous position in the Parks & Recreation Department or personally, whenever the Lawrenceburg Rotary Club or any of its members called upon Mike for his help, he was always there. As his brother Jonathan so aptly put it, when you asked Mike for his help, he always said "What do you need and when do you need me?". Mike's untimely death was a blow to this club and this community. He will be sorely missed.
When Paul P. Harris, the founder of Rotary, died in 1947, Rotarians the world over honored this remarkable man by creating the Paul Harris Fellows as a "living memorial" to his legacy of service. To become a Paul Harris Fellow, an individual makes a donation of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation, or an individual or group can make someone a PHF by making the donation in his name. The PHF contributions make possible scholarships which advance the work of the Rotary Foundation, one of Paul Harris’ favorite projects, and also make possible various grant programs that fund World Community Service projects and local projects supported by the Foundation.
